Taylormade Stealth vs Stealth 2 Driver Comparison

Taylormade Stealth vs Stealth 2 Driver Comparison

The Taylormade Stealth 2 Driver Family

Before we dive into the heart of this comparison post, it’s important to point out that there are three distinctly different versions of the Taylormade Stealth 2 Driver Family.

Taylormade Stealth 2 Driver

This is the most widely used version in the Stealth 2 Driver family. The Stealth 2 is optimized for the best combination of distance, accuracy, and forgiveness. Importantly, the swing speed requirements of the Stealth 2 are far more accommodating than the Stealth 2 Plus. It is well suited to players with a swing speed ranging from 80 – 110 mph.

Taylormade Stealth 2 Plus Driver

The Stealth 2 Plus is the lowest-spinning version of the three. It is designed to unlock maximum distance for players with fast and extra-fast swing speeds. To consider putting this driver in the bag, you need to have a driver clubhead speed of at least 105 mph. In truth, it’s best suited to players with a clubhead speed of 110 mph or faster.

Taylormade Stealth 2 HD Driver

HD stands for High Draw. The Stealth 2 HD driver produces a higher ball flight than the other Stealth drivers, and it also has a built-in draw bias.

The Stealth 2 HD driver caters to players that struggle with a slice, and it can also be a very good fit for low-swing speed players. When you have a slow-to-moderate swing speed, some extra backspin can help produce maximum carry numbers.

Taylormade Stealth vs Stealth 2 - Key Differences

1. Improved 60X Carbon Twist Face

It’s worth keeping in mind that both the original Stealth Driver and the updated Stealth 2 Driver have a 60X Carbon Twist Face. After all, that was one of the primary selling points of the Stealth 1. With the Stealth 2, Taylormade have made a few improvements to the 60X Carbon Twist Face, resulting in two primary benefits.

  • Benefit 1: Increased Forgiveness
  • Benefit 2: Better Ball Speed On Off-Center Strikes

It is also worth pointing out that the new 60X Carbon Twist face is lighter than the original, weighing in at 24 grams rather than 26 grams.

2. Updated Ring Construction

At first glance, the only noticeable difference with the ring construction is the color. The original Stealth Drivers have a black ring, while the Stealth 2 Drivers have a red ring. Importantly, the new ring is actually built with a different material. Instead of utilizing lightweight aluminum, the rings on the new models have been crafted from a carbon composite material which is even lighter than aluminum.

The key benefit is that the weight savings from the new material have been redistributed into other sections of the club, in order to increase MOI and forgiveness.

3. Higher MOI (ie More Forgiving)

While the overarching shape of each Stealth Driver is very similar, Taylormade has increased the amount of weight packed into the very back of the driver. The Stealth 2 literally has a 25 gram Tungsten weight built into the tail of the driver head. This helps the Stealth 2 deliver higher MOI numbers than the original Stealth driver, and it is another reason that the Stealth 2 is considered the more forgiving driver of the two.

4. New Sliding Weight Track (Stealth 2 Plus Only)

Both the Stealth Plus and the Stealth 2 Plus include a sliding weight that can help you fine-tune the club to suit your preferred shot shape.
The key difference with the Stealth 2 Plus is that the weight inside the track is now 50% heavier (15 grams instead of 10 grams).

This gives the Stealth 2 Plus a small advantage over the original Stealth Plus in terms of player customization options. It makes it easier to set up the club for a permanent power draw or a permanent power face, depending on which shot shape you prefer.

5. Considerably More Carbon

Taylormade has greatly enhanced the use of Carbon in the Stealth 2 range of drivers. More specifically:

  • The Stealth 2 has almost double the amount of carbon compared to the original
  • The Stealth 2 Plus features 75% more carbon usage

The common theme here is that by using extremely lightweight carbon, TM can distribute the ‘weight saved’ in other areas of the club in order to improve launch conditions and increase forgiveness.

6. Cosmetic Updates

The last thing to note is that the Stealth 2 Driver Family has received a noticeable cosmetic update. While the overall color scheme is very similar, the Stealth 2 has more red undertones on the sole, and the construction ring is also red in this year’s edition.

The asymmetric inertia generator is also considerably more noticeable in the Stealth 2 driver, with the silver 25 gram tungsten weight very prominent in the updated design.
