Taylormade P770 vs Taylormade P790

Taylormade P770 Irons (2020) vs Taylormade P790 Irons (2019)

Quick Summary

Taylormade P770 Irons: Released in 2020, the new P770 irons are effectively a slimmed down version of the P790’s, designed for highly skilled players. They are arguably the best looking irons that Taylormade have ever made. The P770’s have more loft than the P790’s across the set, and they cater to a lower handicap range (0 to 8).

Taylormade P790 Irons: Released in 2019, the new Taylormade P790’s have improved upon the most popular irons that Taylormade have ever made (the original P790’s). The P790’s cater to a wider range of handicaps (3-15), they pack more game improvement technology, and they fall more firmly into the ‘player-distance’ category. The P790’s launch high with relatively low spin. This is a recipe for distance and accuracy that most amateur golfers grow very fond of over time.

It should be pretty clear that the P770’s are closer to traditional lofts than the P790’s. Each an every P770 iron has more loft than it’s P790 equivalent. In some cases, like the 3 iron, the difference is only 0.5 degrees. In mid-irons however, there is a substantial difference between them.

With the 5 iron, 6 iron, 7 iron and 8 iron, there is at least 2 degrees more loft in the P770’s than the P790’s. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The P770’s cater to a slightly higher skill bracket, and better players may prefer a setup that falls in-between power spec lofts and traditional lofts.

Compact Players Shaping

Compact Players Shape P770 Irons

Designed to fit the eye of a more discerning player, P•770 shaping relies on visual cues such as a thinner topline, less offset and shorter blade length when compared to the P•790.

Forged Performance + Forgiveness

A forged hollowed-body construction and ultra-thin face are designed for enhanced feel, distance and forgiveness. The combination of a Thru-Slot Speed Pocket and Progressive ICT are engineered to protect ball speed across the face and improve playability. Even with its compact head shape, P•770 is loaded with the technology needed to make it playable for a wide range of golfers.

Design DNA of the P790

DNA P770

With the technology of P•790 in a smaller package, P•770 is forged from the same DNA with hollow body construction, SpeedFoam™ and advanced tungsten weighting for precise CG placement.

Impressive Distance

P•770 punches above its weight class. This more compact players iron has no problem keeping up with the heavy hitters, delivering explosive power and distance.

Forged Hollow Body Construction

These irons consist of a thin, wrap around forged 4140 steel face, soft carbon steel body and up to 46g of tungsten weighting designed to deliver explosive distance and forgiveness.

SpeedFoam™

An ultra-light urethane foam injected inside the head that’s engineered to push the design limits of face speed while simultaneously improving feel.

Thru-Slot Speed Pocket™

Our most flexible Speed Pocket™ design is engineered to maximize ball speeds and provide forgiveness on low face shots.

Progressive Inverted Cone Technology

Engineers strategically positioned Progressive ICT in each iron to improve accuracy and protect off-center ball speed. Each face is uniquely designed to optimize performance for the specific iron.

Final Thoughts

Taylormade have done a sterling job with the new P790’s and the P770’s.

If you spend a bit of time on GolfWRX, it’s pretty clear that there are a lot of good players that want a P790 with a more compact frame and slightly more traditional lofts. That’s exactly what the P770’s are. Taylormade have literally created a product to satisfy a growing appetite for skilled player irons, with a bit of game improvement technology, and descent distance.

With that being said, the P790’s are still the better choice for most golfers. They have more game improvement technology, they will give you more distance and less spin. All of this adds up to a player distance iron that could find its way into the bag of a 3 handicap, or even a 15 handicap.

Ultimately, if you just want to hit the ball long and straight, the P790’s are the right choice for you. However, if you want to shape the ball a bit more, dial back the distance slightly, and bag some of the best looking irons ever made, the P770’s are the better option.
